Backpack Buddies began about fifteen years ago. At that time, a total of about four hundred backpacks, costing roughly twenty dollars each, were provided to less fortunate elementary school children by area churches, organized under Churches Touching Lives for Christ (CTLC).
It was recognized that some of the children returning to school did not have the supplies they needed and were therefore starting the school year at a disadvantage. School is tough enough, but starting without the necessary supplies makes it all the more difficult. Covenant Lutheran Church has been involved in this ministry from the start, providing twenty to twenty-five backpacks each year.
There are now twenty-three organizations working in conjunction with CTLC to provide sixteen-hundred backpacks to Temple area elementary school aged children.
The costs for the backpacks has risen to about thirty-five dollars.
Each year, about mid-June, the number of children needing assistance is announced, though no names are provided. The grade level and number of boys and girls are assigned to each participating organization, who then purchase the required supplies and return the filled backpacks to a central location where they are passed out to the children.
